Jaguar XJ, XF, XEL and XEF: Picking a Carbon Fibre Steering Wheel

Four model names, one family look, three different cores underneath. The badge on the boot lid will not tell you which wheel your car takes.

Jaguar ran the XJ and XF through more facelifts than body changes, and the steering wheel moved with almost every one of them. A 2012 car and a 2018 car can wear the same rim shape in a photograph and still carry a different core, a different button cluster, or a loom that feeds a heated rim on one and nothing on the other. Order by model name and the wheel arrives looking right and refusing to mount.

The badge on the boot lid tells you very little. The core under the airbag tells you everything.

Every wheel in our Jaguar range is built the same way: a new rim and trim, fitted over your own core. That single decision is what keeps the airbag, the horn, the buttons and the paddles working exactly as they did, and it is also why the questions below matter more than the year of the car.

What you keep, and what you change

The rim, the grips and the trim are new. Everything the car talks to stays: airbag, horn, button pods, paddle modules and the clock spring behind them. That is not a shortcut, it is the reason the swap is reversible and the reason the car keeps passing the checks it already passed.

Fitment then comes down to three things, none of which are printed on the model badge:

  • Paddles or no paddles. The two cores are not interchangeable. A car with paddle cut-outs needs the cut-out version.
  • Heated rim. If your original wheel carries the heating loom, that has to move across too.
  • Button cluster. XJ and XF pods differ across the facelifts, and the spoke shape follows them.

Send a photograph of your own wheel, straight on, with the airbag still fitted. It answers all three faster than the VIN does.

The basics

Three finishes, three different jobs

Same core underneath. What changes is what you look at every day, and in one case, what the car tells you while you drive.

01

Gloss carbon

Vacuum bagged, autoclave cured, then a UV-stable clear coat. Deep twill weave that reads almost black until the light hits it.
Best for a factory-plus lookMatches gloss trim and piano-black consoles
02

Forged carbon

Chopped strand, marble pattern, no weave to line up at the spoke joins. Scratches read as texture rather than damage.
Best for a matte, technical interiorHides dust and fingerprints far better
03

LED shift lights

A strip set into the top of the rim and wired to the car, so the revs come to you instead of pulling your eyes down to the cluster.
The only version that adds functionThe other two are finish, this one is equipment
Paddle cut-outs are moulded into the rim, not cut afterwards. XJ and XF cores differ here.

Made after you order, not pulled off a shelf

Nothing in this range sits in a warehouse waiting. Grip material, stitching colour, the stripe at twelve o’clock and the rim profile are all chosen at the point of order, which is why the stitching can be matched to the seats instead of being close enough. Production runs 10 to 15 business days, then the wheel ships with tracking.

It also means the answer to “can you do blue stitching with a matte clear coat” is usually yes rather than a stock check.

The part nobody asks about

We do not ship airbags, and you would not want us to. Yours goes straight back in. The job is: disconnect the battery and let it settle, pull the wheel with a proper puller rather than a hammer, move the core across, then torque to spec. With the right tools it is about an hour, and the fitting guide that ships with the wheel covers the battery procedure step by step.

What we would not do is treat it as a ten-minute job with the battery still connected.

Common questions

Will my airbag and buttons still work?

Yes. The wheel is built on your original core, so the airbag, horn, button pods, paddles and clock spring all go back on unchanged. Nothing in the car's wiring changes.

My car has paddle shifters. Does that matter?

It is the first thing that matters. Paddle and non-paddle cores are different parts, so tell us which one your car has before the order is placed.

Can the stitching match my interior?

That is part of the order. Stitching colour, the twelve o'clock stripe and the rim profile are all selected up front, along with gloss, matte or forged carbon.

How long until it arrives?

10 to 15 business days in production, because the wheel is made after you order it. After that it ships with tracking, and it carries a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects.
