RS Q5 Style Honeycomb Grille for Audi Q5 & SQ5 (2008-2012): The Front-End Upgrade Guide
Nothing separates a standard Q5 from an RS Q5 at a glance faster than the grille. The factory horizontal slat grille reads family SUV — the RS honeycomb mesh reads performance. This guide covers what actually changes, how fitment works on 2008-2012 Q5 and SQ5 models, what the install really takes, and why a grille swap gets you most of the RS look for a fraction of a front-end conversion.
In this guide
- Why the grille changes the front end more than any other part
- Factory slat grille vs RS Q5 style honeycomb mesh, side by side
- Fitment on the 2008-2012 Q5 and SQ5, sensors included
- What ships in the box and the six-step install
- Grille swap vs a full RS front end, on cost and downtime
Why the Grille Does More Than Any Other Front-End Part
The grille is the largest single visual element on the nose of a Q5. Headlights, bumper trim and splitters all read as detail — the grille reads as the face. Change it and everything around it shifts with it, which is why a grille swap changes a car more than any other part at the same price.
That is especially true on the 8R Q5. The factory grille is a conservative horizontal slat design, usually framed in chrome or grey, and it sets a calm, practical tone for the whole front end. The RS Q5’s hexagonal honeycomb does the opposite: it drops the visual centre of the nose, adds width, and tells you the car is about performance before you have looked at anything else. You are not buying a bodykit — you are changing the one element that sets the tone for all of it.

Factory Slat Grille vs RS Q5 Style Honeycomb Grille
Both grilles bolt to the same car. The difference is what they do for it.
| Factory Q5 slat grille | RS Q5 style honeycomb grille | |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh pattern | Horizontal slats with a chrome or grey surround | Vertical hexagonal honeycomb, frame and mesh in one piece |
| Finish | Textured matte plastic; chrome trim pits and dulls with age | Gloss black frame and mesh, multi-stage paint with UV clear coat |
| What it says | Conservative, family-SUV front end | Lower, wider, RS-inspired stance |
| Airflow | Factory tuned | Large honeycomb openings keep airflow to the radiator and intercooler |
| Emblem layout | Rings only | Rings up top, quattro lettering on the lower bar |
| Fitting | OEM part | Factory mounting tabs and hardware locations, no cutting or drilling |
| Price | Priced as an OEM part | $215 factory direct |
Fitment: Q5, SQ5 and the 8R Model Years
This grille is built for the Audi Q5 (Typ 8R) from 2008 to 2012, and it fits SQ5 variants of the same generation. It is a direct replacement that uses the factory mounting points, so the job is a swap rather than a conversion.
- Direct bolt-on: factory tabs and hardware locations, no cutting, drilling or trimming of the bumper or support structure.
- Sensors stay put: the grille keeps the factory clearances, so it does not sit over the parking sensor or front camera hardware on the bumper.
- Model years matter: facelift and pre-facelift 8R cars use different bumper trim, so confirm your exact year before you order.
What Is in the Box
- Gloss black RS style honeycomb grilleSingle-piece gloss black frame with the honeycomb mesh moulded into it — not a mesh insert bonded in afterwards.
- quattro emblem and mounting baseThe lower-bar quattro lettering that finishes the RS look, with its own base.
- Licence plate bracketFits the factory plate location on the new grille.
- Digital installation guide (PDF)Step-by-step notes, sent with your order.
Fitting the Grille: Six Steps
- Let the car sit in the shade for a while so the bumper plastics are warm and flexible, then open the hood and remove the upper radiator cover trim (push-pin clips).
- Disconnect the battery if you will be working close to any sensor connectors.
- Release the factory grille from its perimeter clips and ease it forward. Those tabs are the only fragile part of the job, so work them one at a time.
- Fit the licence plate bracket and the quattro emblem base to the new grille before it goes anywhere near the car.
- Line the new grille up with the bumper opening and press from the centre outward until every tab clicks home.
- Refit the upper trim, reconnect the battery, close the hood, then check the panel gaps and make sure nothing sits over a sensor or camera lens.
Gloss Black ABS: Finish, Durability and Care
The grille is moulded in high-impact ABS, with the honeycomb mesh formed in the same mould as the frame. That single-piece construction is why it stays rigid: there is no separate mesh insert to loosen, rattle or work free at the edges.

Single-piece honeycomb molded with the frame, quattro lower bar and the factory-style mounting tabs.
The gloss black finish is applied in stages — primer, base colour and a UV-resistant clear coat — rather than a single pass. That is what keeps a gloss black front-end part from chalking and greying after a couple of summers of sun and road debris.
- Wash with a soft mitt and pH-neutral soap, and rinse the mesh at low pressure.
- Do not aim a pressure washer straight at the mesh edges, the same rule as any gloss black trim.
- A light sealant or ceramic spray on the frame keeps water spotting down and makes bug removal easier.
- Small stone chips in the clear coat polish out; deeper ones are worth touching in early.
Grille Swap vs a Full RS Front End
If the RS Q5 face is the goal, there are two routes to it. Here is the honest comparison.
| RS style grille swap | Full RS front bumper conversion | |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | One grille — $215 | Bumper, grille, fog surrounds, lower grilles, underpanels, hardware |
| Paint | None | Colour match to your car, plus blending |
| Fitting | 1-2 hours, DIY friendly | Body shop job, bumper off, panel alignment |
| Downtime | An afternoon | Days in the shop |
| Reversible? | Yes — the factory grille goes back on any time | Once painted and fitted, it stays |
| Result | The RS Q5 honeycomb face and quattro lower bar | The full RS bumper shape as well as the grille |
For most owners the grille is the sensible 80/20: nearly all of the visual change, a fraction of the cost, and none of the downtime. Go for the full bumper only if you want the RS bumper shape itself, not just the face.

FAQ
Will this grille fit my 2008-2012 Q5 or SQ5?
It is built for the Q5 (Typ 8R) from 2008 to 2012, including SQ5 variants. Facelift and pre-facelift cars use different bumper trim, so send us your exact model year and trim and we will confirm before it ships.
Do I have to remove the front bumper?
No. In most cases the grille releases from the front once the upper trim is off, and loosening the upper fasteners gives extra access. Plan for 1-2 hours with basic hand tools.
Does the kit include the Audi rings?
No. The kit ships with the quattro emblem, its mounting base and a licence plate bracket. The emblem base takes a standard set of rings, which you can source separately — ask us and we will confirm what your car needs.
Will it cover my parking sensors or front camera?
No. The sensor and camera hardware sits in the bumper rather than the grille, and the grille keeps the factory clearances, so nothing is blocked.
Will the gloss black fade over time?
It is finished with a UV-stable clear coat over primer and base colour, which is what prevents the chalking and greying you see on single-stage gloss parts. Wash with pH-neutral soap and avoid pressure washing the mesh edges and it will hold its finish.
Gloss black ABS or carbon fibre?
Different jobs. Carbon fibre gives you the woven look and saves weight at a higher price — the right choice when the weave is the theme of the build. Gloss black ABS delivers the RS Q5 face, matches the factory black trim and costs far less. Want carbon instead? Send us your model and we will quote it.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every shipment is tracked and insured. Send us photos inside the warranty window and we will replace it.
